    JLM Voluntarism Scholarship Award

    Lesson Plans on Transportation, Distribution and Logistics

    Through a previous grant from the Federal Highway Administration we developed over 500 lesson plans that touch on multiple modes of transportation.  These lesson plans were developed in partnership among state DOT offices, state departments of education and classroom  teachers.   They are primarily used by teachers of students in grades 6-12.  You may see the full range of lesson plans at www.transportationcareers.org.  Each lesson plan is teacher ready and includes a list of inexpensive supplies, work sheets, power points, and other resources depending on the unit.  There is  also an “Introduction to Transportation, Distribution and Logistics course” designed for 9th and 10th grade students.  The course is modularized and can be delivered in a variety of time segments.

    Aspirations in Computing

    The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Awardees are selected for their computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing offers both a national and local "affiliate" competitions to generate support and visibility for women's participation in communities nationwide.     Computer Science Information

    This organization, computer Science Online, recently published an in-depth guide to computer science and careers.     You Be The Chemist Challenge

    Get your students excited about chemistry with a free, national academic competition for Grade 5-8 students. The Challenge tests students' knowledge of chemistry concepts, scientific theories, and laboratory safety in an engaging, interactive format.

    Understanding Geometry Grants

    The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Improving Students' Understanding of Geometry Grant seeks to enable students to better appreciate and understand an aspect of geometry that is consistent with the council's principles and standards for school mathematics. Projects should include applications of geometry to art, literature, music, architecture, nature or other relevant area; they may also integrate the use of technology into the teaching of geometry. For 2015-2016, grants with a maximum of $4,000 each will be awarded to persons currently teaching grades PK-8. Projects are to be completed between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016.     Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology

    Students can compete as individuals or as a member of a team. Individual projects promote independent research. Team projects foster collaborative research efforts, as well as individual contributions to the cooperative endeavor. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. Submissions are due by September 30, 2014. Good luck!

    Captain Planet Foundation Grants

    This Foundation funds and supports hands-on environmental projects for students. The objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower students around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their local communities. Grant amounts range from $250 to $2,500. Deadlines for submitting grant applications are September 30 and January 31.

    Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy

    This Academy is a one-week, all-expenses-paid professional development program for teachers of Grades 3-5. Participants will learn interactive ways to inspire their students in math and science.     National Climate Assessment Resources

    The National Climate Assessment offers a wealth of actionable science about the causes, effects, risks and possible responses to human-caused climate change.     Target Field Trip Grants

    Target will be awarding more than 5,000 grants of $700 each to schools for this school year. Teachers can use grants to fund school field trips to connect their curricula to out-of-school experiences, including trips to museums, cultural events, civic experiences and environmental sites.

    Toshiba America Foundation

    This grant contributes to science & math education by investing in teacher designed projects for students in Grades K-5. Teachers are invited to apply for a $1,000 Toshiba America Foundation grant to help bring an innovative hands-on project into their classrooms.

    NSTA New Science Teacher Academy

    The NSTA New Science Teacher Academy for 2014-15 provides educators in their 2nd through 5th year of teaching middle or high school science grant-sponsored professional development to enhance their skills and content knowledge. There are lots of perks to this program including attendance at the 2015 NSTA Conference in Chicago, including paid expenses for air travel, lodging, meals, and registration.

    NSTA is offering 19 different award programs that are administered by the Association and funded by various corporations and organizations.     Girls Experiencing Engineering (GEE)

    Girls Experiencing Engineering (GEE) is a fast-paced, interactive summer program (structured in a series of one week, 20-hour intensive sessions) that seeks to instill young women with confidence, interest, and awareness of the wide array of career opportunities within science, technology, and engineering fields. This link contains a vast resource of TN standards-based lesson plans developed for the program since 2011.  All activities are engaging, project-based lessons demonstrating applications of STEM concepts.

    Research Experience for Teachers

    The Center sponsors two programs for teachers interested in performing research. The experience can be used to improve both their own content knowledge and their classrooms.     Vernier Technology Awards

    Do you have an innovative use of data collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom? A total of 7 awards are presented: 1 award at the elementary level (grades K–5); 2 awards at the middle level (grades 6–8); 3 awards at the high school level (grades 9–12); and 1 award at the college level. Each award will consist of $1,500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference in Boston, $1,000 in cash for the teacher, and $3,000 in Vernier products.     The new TI STEM Behind Hollywood is an exciting new program created by TI with the assistance of the Science & Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences, to get students excited about STEM education and careers. From zombies and superheroes to crime drama and space, Hollywood’s blockbuster genres rely on real-world science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to bring the magic to life on the big screen.

    Toshiba America Foundation

    This grant contributes to science & math education by investing in teacher designed projects for students  in grades 6-12. Grant requests for $5,000 or less are accepted on a rolling basis, throughout the calendar year. Grant requests for $5,000 or more are accepted and reviewed twice a year - August 1st and February 1st each year.

    Shell Science Teaching Award

    This award recognizes one outstanding classroom science teacher (K–12) who has had a positive impact on his or her students, school, and community through exemplary classroom science teaching. Award is $10,000 and an all-expense paid trip to attend NSTA’s National Conference; two finalists will also receive all-expense-paid trips to the conference.

    Scientific Awards for Excellence

    The Delta Education/CPO/Frey Scientific Awards for Excellence in Inquiry-based Science Teaching will recognize and honor three (3) full-time PreK–12 teachers of science who successfully use inquiry-based science to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom. This is for PreK–12 teachers and the award is $1,500 towards expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference in Boston, and $1,500 for the awardee.

    DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition

    This one is a student competition that invites students in grades 7-12 to write a 700 to 1,000-word science essay in one of the four categories:
    Together, we can feed the world.
    Together, we can build a secure energy future.
    Together, we can protect people and the environment.
    Together, we can be innovative anywhere.
    Developed in collaboration with The Walt Disney World Resort, NASA and NSTA, the competition offers young students the opportunity to explore science, develop new skills and gain confidence in communicating scientific ideas. Created to honor the Challenger astronauts, students can win savings bonds up to $5,000, and a trip to Walt Disney World and to the Kennedy Space Center. Teachers win too! Along with the trips with their students, teachers can also win $500 grants.

    Annie’s, makers of that delicious macaroni and cheese, is offering $500 or $1,500 grants to K-12 school gardens that connect children directly to real food.     Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision

    This is a big one! ExploraVision is a competition that encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of a future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. Teams of two to four students research scientific principles and current technologies as the basis for deigning innovative technologies that could exist in 20 years. Students compete for up to $240,000 in savings bonds (maturity value) for college and cool gifts from Toshiba. First- and second-place teams also receive an expenses-paid trip with their families, mentor and coach to Washington, D.C. for a gala awards weekend in June 2014.
